Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, in full Ebenezer Scrooge gear.
Depp plays Scrooge in Paramount’s upcoming film, “Ebenezer,” directed by Ti West, which hits theaters in November. The actor appeared outside a store called “Scrooge and Marley” in San Diego’s Gaslamp District around 2:30 p.m., but fans began gathering at the location shortly after noon to get a glimpse of what the studio had planned to promote the film.
First, the carolers came out and performed a medley to get into the Christmas spirit on a warm 80 degree afternoon. Then Depp emerged, completely transformed into the grumpy character with makeup and Scrooge’s iconic black coat and matching top hat.
“Don’t you have a job?” Depp, in character, croaked to the large crowd gathered on the street. “It seems like you have a lot of free time. I work.”
“Good morning, Mr. Scrooge,” one person shouted. He replied dryly, “What’s so nice about it?”
While Depp’s appearance was intended to be a surprise, some lucky fans spotted the star while dressing up as his most famous characters, including Captain Jack Sparrow from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies and the Mad Hatter from “Alice in Wonderland,” and Depp spent some time poking fun at them. Depp entertained the crowd with a silly skit for almost half an hour.
West’s “Ebenezer” also stars Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, with Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen. The film will debut in theaters on November 13.
Depp, whose career in front of the camera has recently been overshadowed by his legal battles and off-screen dramas, returns to blockbuster movies with “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol.” Paramount premiered a first look at the film at CinemaCon earlier this year, and Depp also took the stage in Las Vegas to wild applause.
“It really has been an extraordinary privilege,” Depp said of playing the classic role. The story of Scrooge, he added, is one that “has obsessed me since I was a little boy.”
