Kevin Costner and Luke Grimes may have played a father-son duo on-screen in “Yellowstone,” but off-screen, the two actors haven’t spoken since Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama concluded.
“I’ve never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together,” Grimes, who now stars in the “Yellowstone” spin-off “Marshals,” said in a recent interview with USA Today. “Not for any other reason other than just, you know, we’re both busy guys and life moves on.”
“Yellowstone” ran for five seasons and came to an end in December, 2024. Costner appeared as the family patriarch, John Dutton, while Grimes played John’s youngest son, Kayce. Grimes appeared on the show throughout the duration of its run, while Costner’s character was killed off and subsequently did not return for the final six episodes of the show that made up Season 5B.
When asked if Costner would make a future appearance in “Marshals,” the actor said it “would be cool,” though he noted, “I doubt that will happen at this point.” He continued: “I just don’t know… I think, if there was a flashback, I’d probably rather it be with Monica than John. I think that’d be more poignant to the character, but we’ll see.” (Grimes was referring to Monica Long Dutton, Kayce’s wife, played by Kelsey Asbille. Her character has died of cancer by the time “Marshals” premieres.)
“I think that’d be more poignant to the character,” he said. “There’s been no conversation, but I sure would love it. I love working with her.”
Per the official “Marshals” logline, the spin-off follows Kayce as he ventures beyond Yellowstone Ranch and joins an “elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
Season 1 of the show premiered earlier this year in March, while Season 2 premiered Sunday.
