There are Magic: The Gathering (MTG) sets that introduce us to new planes, and then there are sets that completely reshape the foundation of the game. Reality Fracture sits dramatically in the latter.

Marking the conclusion of an epic three-year storyline, Wizards of the Coast is pushing tabletop play into chaotic uncharted territory. As Jace Beleren’s twisted alternate reality—The Echoverse—collides directly with our Multiverse, players are left with a choice: stand against his reality-bending ambition, or embrace his vision as a student of Hexhaven.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when 30 years of Magic history gets flipped on its head, this is the set to pay attention to. The artwork is stunning, and there are plenty of throw backs to cards of old.

A story of twisted realities

Narratively, MTG: Reality Fracture is the endgame. Jace’s vision is taking over, reshaping iconic planes, spells, and familiar heroes into warped versions of their former selves. Jace is one of the central characters to Magic lore, a human planeswalker that is intelligent, specialising in mental magic such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and illusion. He’s often a little misguided and we’ve seen him in many previous sets: when he travelled to Bloomburrow, when he encountered Kaito in Duskmourn, and many other adventures.

The highlight of this storytelling experiment comes in the form of Echoed Pairs. These are cards depicting the exact same characters across split timelines, appearing together in the same pack. Seeing a classic character like Chandra casting iconic fire magic, side-by-side with her chilly Echoverse counterpart slinging ice spells, creates a visually stunning clash across realms that hits right in the lore-lover’s sweet spot. In particular, I really liked seeing Traxos across both blue (Academy Guardian) and colourless (Scourge Eternal) artifact cards. It’s a pretty cool sight.

Multiversal mechanics: Flipping the game on its head

Mechanically, Reality Fracture embraces high-concept game design that rewards strategic planning and playstyle flexibility:

• Empower Jace: A brand-new keyword designed around the master architect himself. When triggered, ‘Empower Jace’ creates a Jace Planeswalker Token on the battlefield. If you already have a Jace in play, it adds loyalty counters instead, thus building a terrifying engine of value that rapidly demands an answer from your opponent.
• Prepared Creatures: Returning straight from Secrets of Strixhaven, these two-part card frames show creature stats on the left and a castable spell on the right. A creature can cast its spell as long as it’s “prepared”, bridging tempo and utility seamlessly into a single card slot. The text on the left will tell the player in what state the creature becomes prepared.

Synergies and play strategy

The set heavily emphasises token-manipulation strategies under the “Multiverse Reforged” theme. Replacing traditional, low-impact tokens with new, twisted creature versions allows you to execute Jace’s master plan on the fly.

Imagine triggering Empower Jace to secure board presence, while setting up Prepared Creatures to hold spell answers on standby. Paired with return-mechanic synergies, it creates mind-boggling lines of play that reward players who like thinking three turns ahead.

Artwork, treatments, and collector highlights

Visually, Magic: The Gathering Reality Fracture is a triumph of surrealism, alternate art styles, and frame-breaking design.

• Bloodline Recollector (Serialised #/500): The headliner of the entire set. A double rainbow foil treatment limited to just 500 copies worldwide (found exclusively in Collector Boosters), this card is a mechanically and visually warped homage to Secrets of Strixhaven’s Emeritus of Ideation.
• Shattered Mirror Cards: These are absolutely gorgeous, and probably some of my favourite cards in this set. Just 13 of these exist in Reality Fracture, showcasing a card’s original inspiration alongside its Echoverse counterpart on a single frame. Unique “facet foil” versions drop in Collector Boosters, with non-foil variants appearing across both Play and Collector Boosters.
• Borderless Echoed Pairs: 15 total pair sets featuring interconnected artwork that flows across both cards, giving collectors an incredible display piece when laid side-by-side.
• Braintwister Series: 23 dizzying, mind-bending variant cards packed into Play and Collector Boosters designed to trick your senses with striking, trippy art treatments.
• Japan Showcase: 10 cards reimagined by Japanese artists inspired by hobby shops, available in Traditional and Fracture Foil treatments exclusively in Collector Boosters.
• Jace Tower Basic Lands: A breathtaking 15-land borderless panorama spanning three lands per colour, highlighting the dizzying height of Jace Tower. You might literally need a bigger playmat to show off the full artwork.
• Portal Dual Lands: Rare Dual Lands aligning with Hexhaven college colours return to open pathways to familiar dimensions, available in foil and non-foil in both Play and Collector Boosters.
