I’m normally a Target shopper. But even though most of the price discrepancies were mere pennies, they continued to pile up in Walmart’s favor.

However, Target certainly had merits, specifically with its impressive selection of backpacks, mechanical pencils, and pens. Plus, I had cheaper fashion folders and single-pack Post-it notes.

However, Walmart offered equivalent or lower prices in almost every other category I evaluated, both for its private-label and name-brand products.

However, it is important to consider that this is a limited view based on in-store prices at the time of my travels. Both stores were holding major back-to-school sales (or “throwbacks” at Walmart) at the time of my visit, and the best deals can vary from week to week.

For example, since my shopping trip, Target has announced a number of discounts on back-to-school essentials, like 30% off uniform polos and 20% off Champion backpacks.

If you want the lowest prices, keep an eye on retailers’ weekly ads and seasonal offers. The “best” retailer for you will probably depend on when you shop and what you’re looking for.

One thing’s for sure, though: Both stores are solid places to do back-to-school shopping on a budget. And who knows? Maybe a round of late summer sales will bring me back to Target soon.
