Christopher Nolan’s epic spectacle added £11.8 million ($15.7 million) in its second run, marking a remarkably slight drop and bringing its domestic take to £35.3 million ($46.9 million) after 10 days of wide release in cinemas.
Disney maintained second place, as Pixar’s animated hit “Toy Story 5” grossed $2.5 million in its sixth weekend for a total of $65.2 million. Disney also took third place with its live-action film “Moana,” which added $1.8 million in its third frame, raising its gross to $11.1 million.
Universal took fourth place with its animated holdover “Minions & Monsters,” grossing $1.7 million in its fourth frame to bring its cume to $16.1 million. TGS Cinemas Limited took fifth place with the standout release of H. Vinoth’s Indian political action drama “Jana Nayagan,” star C. Joseph Vijay’s swan song. The broad and specialized entry accumulated a starting mark of $596,324. The film, which was supposed to be released in January, was stopped by the Indian censorship. In a dramatic turn of events in May, Vijay’s political party won the elections in Tamil Nadu and he took over as Chief Minister of the state. An uncut version of the film released in the UK.
Black Bear’s ensemble comedy-drama “The Invite” moved into sixth place in its fourth plot, adding £$403,689 for a cumulative total of $4 million. Universal’s horror-romance film “Obsession” continued its remarkably resilient run in seventh place, grossing $336,507 in its 11th week of release to bring its total to $25.3 million.
Studiocanal’s horror film “Evil Dead Burn” placed eighth in its third weekend, grossing $309,193 for a total of $2.8 million. Universal’s sci-fi thriller “Disclosure Day” took ninth place in its seventh week, grossing $103,957 to bring its cumulative total to $17 million. Warner Bros.’ The superhero movie “Supergirl” rounded out the top 10 in its fifth frame, adding $83,229 for a cumulative total of $7.6 million.
Looking ahead to the upcoming theatrical window, Trafalgar Releasing kicks off midweek arrivals on July 28 with the presentation of the musical event “Wham! 10 Days In China,” followed on July 30 by Dreamz Entertainment with the release of the Indian drama “Srinivasa Mangapuram.” On July 31, Sony Pictures dominates the broad circuit with the release of Destin Daniel Cretton’s superhero spectacle “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in more than 300 locations.
The specialized, independent and repertory programming of July 31 offers a varied range of counterprogramming. BFI Distribution presents Imran Perretta’s drama “Ish,” while Other Parties Film Company releases Bill Gunn’s classic drama “Personal Problems” on more than 25 screens. Independent and international releases also include Ricardo Silva’s drama “Mistura,” Exposure’s “Exposure” and Zee Studios International’s “Kankaan De Ohle.”
Archive and repertory programming is highlighted by Curzon’s reissue of Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece “The Sacrifice” in a 4K restoration, along with Park Circus’ reissue of Aardman’s classic animated comedy “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit.”
