DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The US military launched airstrikes on Sunday against Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for the killing of US troops in Jordan, further widening the crossfire between the nations as they fight over the Strait of Hormuz.

The attacks, now part of a week-long campaign in which Iran has attacked U.S.-allied countries across the Middle East, come as an interim deal that sought to end the war with Iran collapsed.

The United States has attacked bridges, power facilities and other targets in Iran, and Tehran has retaliated by attacking power and desalination plants in Kuwait, threatening daily life in that small, oil-rich desert nation. Iran has also stepped up its threats to further expand attacks, prompting an overnight warning from the United Arab Emirates, home to Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The US military’s Central Command in its statement also said it attacked “Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites.” He also said for the first time that he was specifically targeting the Guard, a key power base in Iran’s theocracy that controls its ballistic missile arsenal.

Images released by the US military appeared to show attacks carried out by fighter jets and sea-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles. A target site appeared to be in a valley in a mountainous region. The Guard often has missile bases and other military equipment hidden in mountain ranges.

Iran has not provided general information about its material losses in the US campaign, which is now in its eighth day as nations compete for control of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which a fifth of all oil and natural gas traded in peacetime passes.

An Iranian attack on a base in Jordan killed two US service members, left one missing and four required hospitalization, the US military said.

Since the war began, 16 U.S. service members have been killed and more than 430 wounded.

Iranian authorities said Saturday that at least 50 people were killed and more than 500 wounded in the latest US strikes.

Nearly all Arab Gulf states have been targeted by retaliatory strikes by Iran, and a missile alert was sounded in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. However, the UAE has not yet been targeted.

Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, believed to be close to the Guard, issued a threat on Saturday to the United Arab Emirates. Quoting an unnamed official, Fars said continued attacks on Iranian civilian infrastructure would mean that “Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports, as well as the ports of Fujairah and Jebel Ali, must be evacuated immediately.”

Apparently in response to the threat, the Emirati Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement calling for “exercising maximum restraint to avoid dangerous repercussions and the region being dragged into new levels of violence and instability.”

“The UAE emphasized that attacks on civilian infrastructure and facilities in the region… constitute a flagrant and serious violation of the established principles and provisions of international law, and cannot, under any circumstances, be accepted or justified,” the statement added.

During the Iran war, officials say both the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia carried out retaliatory airstrikes by Tehran against their nations.

The secretary general of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, Jasem Mohamed al-Budaiwi, accused Iran of war crimes for attacks on civilian infrastructure and facilities.

Trump has threatened to attack Iran’s power plants and bridges to try to force Tehran to loosen its grip on the Strait of Hormuz. Recent attacks suggest that the US military is carrying out that plan, starting first with Iran’s coastal areas in the strait.

Last week, the United States also reimposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports to stop its crude oil shipments, and the military said Saturday it had diverted five ships and disabled one since then.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, in a statement Saturday, warned of “unforgettable lessons” if the United States continues to attack the Islamic Republic. An Iranian negotiator said Tehran was suspending its commitments to the interim agreement signed about a month ago and aimed at permanently ending the fighting.

Iran’s joint military command said that US “greed, intimidation, totalitarianism or brutality” would be met with a “devastating response.”
