Two U.S. service members died in Jordan on Friday after U.S. and partner forces came under attack with Iranian missiles and drones, the Pentagon said Saturday.

Another American service member is missing and several more were injured in the Iranian attacks. They are the first publicly acknowledged US military deaths in the Middle East conflict since March.

Fourteen American service members died during the first weeks of Operation Epic Fury. More than 425 people were injured over the course of the conflict, which began when the United States and Israel launched surprise attacks on Iran on February 28.

U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East, said in a statement that the two service members died while U.S. and partner forces were “defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks.”

Centcom said four U.S. service members were medically evacuated to local hospitals but have since been released, and several others suffered minor injuries. They returned to duty.

“Out of respect for the families,” the military said, “it will withhold additional information, including the identities of fallen warriors, until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.”

The United States resumed combat operations against Iran earlier this month after a fragile ceasefire collapsed following failed attempts by the two sides to reach a peace deal.

Iran has carried out attacks on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz and launched missiles and drones at countries across the Middle East, including those hosting US bases.

In response, the United States has carried out almost daily attacks against Iran, targeting surveillance sites, weapons, maritime capabilities and other military facilities.

The American casualties are likely to trigger a strong response from the Trump administration.
