NEW YORK — A fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York during the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show, spreading flames and causing a plume of smoke before firefighters extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported.
According to the city’s fire department, two fire vehicles were used to put out the fire. Shortly before 10 p.m. firefighters were seen putting out flames on the bridge, which had been closed to traffic during the show.
A department spokesperson said such fires are not unexpected and is why officials keep crowds at a distance during fireworks.
The show was moved up due to the threat of bad weather that canceled and delayed other celebrations along the East Coast. That includes Washington, where the storm caused attendees to evacuate the National Mall.
