Even the CEO behind a popular AI coding platform says Silicon Valley is overselling AI.
In an episode of the “20VC” podcast released Monday, Avishai Abrahami, CEO of Wix, a web design company that acquired the Base44 vibe coding platform, addressed one of the industry’s biggest debates: AI’s ability to replace traditional software and human employees.
“I would love to say that in three years the team will be a thousand people at Base44 and a thousand people at Wix, and everything else would be AI agents. I’m not so sure that’s possible,” Abrahami said. “I think we all give too much credit to AI and what it can do.”
He added that AI is not working well “for a lot of things” at detailed levels.
The CEO said vibration coding, for example, was far from a perfect solution. Wix bought Base44 for $80 million last year, and Abrahami said he has invested $200 million in the platform.
“You’re trying to build something very complicated, it’s difficult when you’re trying to do visual editing. It’s really annoying,” he said. “You’re not going to code Shopify no matter how good you are.”
In another example, Abrahami said the company tried several times to purchase AI customer service systems, but had to build its own after becoming disappointed with the options available on the market. He also said that he is not prioritizing exchanging human customer service with AI.
“I wouldn’t be so worried about an LLM replacing all kinds of white-collar jobs,” he said. “He’s not that smart. He keeps making stupid mistakes. He’s not very good.”
Abrahami’s comments follow a difficult year for Wix. Its shares have fallen nearly 50% as investors wonder whether AI-powered website builders will erode its core business.
Wix is in a unique position compared to other software providers: while its stock is punished by the industry Teme “SaaSpocalypse,” has reported double-digit revenue growth from Base44.
