Australian Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis has pleaded guilty to driving despite a five-year ban imposed after an incident in 2023 in which he hit his wife with a car.
Dennis, 36, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday to face a charge of driving while disqualified after police stopped him last month while he was behind the wheel with two children as passengers.
Last year, Dennis received a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to an aggravated charge of creating a likelihood of harm under a plea deal in which prosecutors dropped two more serious charges.
The court found that he was not criminally responsible for the death of Melissa Hoskins, but had been reckless in his actions.
During last year’s case, the court heard that the couple, who married in 2018, had been arguing about kitchen renovations before Dennis got into his car to leave.
Hoskins, who was also an Olympic cyclist, jumped onto the hood of the car and then held on to the door as Dennis continued driving. She fell and was then hit by the car. Hoskins later died at the hospital from his injuries.
Dennis was spared jail when he was sentenced last May, and the judge suspended the 17-month prison sentence by imposing a two-year good behavior bond.
He was also disqualified from driving for five years, with a start date from the day of the car incident in December 2023.
On Friday, the court heard that prosecutors requested that the matter be referred to the District Court to deal with both the offense of driving while disqualified and breach of the good conduct bond.
The father of two is due back in court in September.
