President Donald Trump confirmed that he has asked FIFA to review American forward Folarin Balogun’s one-match suspension from the World Cup.

Trump says soccer’s world governing body “made the right decision” in lifting Balogun’s ban, adding it would have left a “huge stain” on the tournament if it had been implemented.

Balogun, his country’s top scorer in the current tournament, was set to be suspended for his team’s round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle on Tuesday.

But on Monday night, FIFA lifted the automatic 12-month one-match ban, clearing the way for the 25-year-old striker to be selected.

Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump said he had asked FIFA to review the decision because he “didn’t believe it was a mistake.”

Trump confirmed that he spoke with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, but said “all” he did was ask for a review, adding that he did not tell the Swiss that he had to lift Balogun’s ban.

“I thought they were two great athletes who collided and tangled,” Trump said.

“I think that [the suspension] It would have left a big stain. I can’t tell you what to do. I don’t think they made the decision; I think it was the commission that made the decision. And it was the right decision.”
