The Germany international has played just nine first-team games this season and has been unable to bowl due to the problem.
South Africa-born Broad, 26, signed a new two-year contract with the club in September, with coach Darren Lehmann hailing him as a “future leader”.
“This has been an extremely frustrating season for me on a personal level and I am very sad that it has come to an end,” Broad told the club’s website., external.
“However, it has been fantastic to see the boys do so well and I will be supporting them over the coming months as we strive for a strong end to the season.”
Northants are third in County Championship Division Two and also lead the T20 Blast Central & West group after winning nine of 10 games, already securing a place in the quarter-finals.
The next trip to Somerset will be on Friday (18:30 GMT).
