England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of The Hundred with a knee injury sustained during the recent one-day international series against India.

Bethell had been named captain of the Birmingham Phoenix for the season.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said the 22-year-old underwent an MRI on Monday, but they did not indicate when he would return.

England’s Test series against Pakistan begins on August 19.

It is a blow for Bethell to miss out on the captaincy experience as he is considered a future England leader having already led the team in a T20 series against Ireland last year.

He has also been in good form, including a player-of-the-match performance in Sunday’s series decider at Lord’s, where he scored 91 at the top of the order and took 1-49.

He will be replaced by South African Donovan Ferreira as captain of the Phoenix, who is a two-time Hundred champion with Oval Invincibles.

Phoenix’s opening match will be against Trent Rockets at Edgbaston on Friday (18:30 BST).

Bethell, who plays county cricket for Warwickshire, was signed by Phoenix at the auction earlier this year with a contract worth £340,000.
