Gloucestershire were able to build on a prolific six-over opening powerplay, in which they posted 67-1. Dawid Malan impressed with 28 off 19 balls in an opening stand of 46 in 4.4 overs with Short, who took 17 off the sixth over, sent by Jordan, including two sixes.

Miles Hammond and Liam Scott fell narrowly to Dan Lawrence and Tom Lawes respectively, but Taylor hit his first ball, from Lawes, for four and added a six and two more boundaries while facing 26 balls.

Short reached a half-century off 33 balls, taking advantage of some inconsistent Surrey bowling on a pitch with more pace than Bristol’s usual surfaces.

The visitors were forced to bring an extra outfielder into the ring in the 19th minute for missing the time limit. Kamran Dharilwal had just been caught off a Sean Abbott no-ball and sent the resulting free-kick straight for six.

It turned out to be his only scoring shot, but Short, who had offered Jordan a tough catch-and-bowl opportunity on 49, stayed focused until the end of the innings to ensure his team a competitive total.

Surrey’s response got off to a poor start when Laurie Evans was trapped behind Scott in the second while attempting a ramp shot. Jason Roy quickly responded with a straight six off Matt Taylor, but fell on the next delivery, missing a shot to deep square to leave his team 14-2.

Hayes got 16 in his first over, but Marchant de Lange quickly removed Josh Phillippe and by the end of the powerplay, Surrey were 48-3.

The unflappable Hayes was visibly excited to take his first wicket for his new county, the prize of Ollie Pope, who had made 20 when he edged an attempted leg-side hit to be caught at cover and Surrey were in deep trouble at 53-4 in the eighth over.

Tom Curran was bowled by left-arm bowler Graeme van Buuren before Hayes struck again, Lawes caught and bowled another from the top edge to make the score 59-6.

Abbott was stumped by Van Buuren’s bowling and at 62-7 the home team had absolute dominance. Despite some belligerent hitting from Lawrence and Jordan, they never seemed to recover and when Lawrence fell to Scott on a total of 110, any doubt about the result was erased.

Hayes claimed his third wicket in the final and Gloucestershire were able to reflect an excellent team performance.

The result leaves both teams second in their respective groups.
