Serena Williams has pulled out of her scheduled Wimbledon appearance in doubles with her older sister Venus due to a knee injury.
The American pair, six-time doubles champions at the All England Club, were scheduled to meet on a Grand Slam court for the first time since 2022 later on Saturday.
However, Serena Williams, 44, is not fit enough to play after suffering a knee problem during their loss to Australia’s Maya Joint on Tuesday.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion did not speak to the media after the match, with Wimbledon organizers saying she was “not capable of assuming” her duties.
“I’m heartbroken to have to retire from doubles,” Serena said in a post on Instagram., external.
“Coming back to compete has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once again meant a lot to me.
“I did everything I could to be prepared, but unfortunately my knee is just not ready to compete.”
