The United States launched another round of airstrikes against Iran on Saturday night, targeting its coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, US military officials said.
The US Central Command (Centcom) said forces successfully attacked Iranian military capabilities, while Iranian state media said Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz had been attacked.
Centcom said it also targeted the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) responsible for the attack that killed two US soldiers in Jordan on Friday, where another service member remains missing.
In response to the latest attacks, Iran’s military said it carried out drone strikes against two US bases in Kuwait, according to state media.
The United States and Iran have stepped up attacks on each other in recent days, and both sides have been accused of attacking critical infrastructure.
On Saturday, Iran said it had carried out “large-scale kamikaze drone attacks” against a “US military depot at Camp Udairi” and another at the “Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait,” according to the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency.
The US strikes, on the eighth consecutive night of strikes, were “designed to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz,” Centcom said.
The strikes were intended to “quickly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against U.S. service members in Jordan last night,” the statement continued.
This followed a week of renewed hostilities in which Washington reimposed its blockade of Iranian ports and Tehran declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, when its preliminary ceasefire collapsed less than a month after it began.
In a statement on Saturday, Centcom said: “Two U.S. service members in Jordan were killed in action as U.S. Central Command (Centcom) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Additionally, one service member is currently missing.
“Out of respect for the families, Centcom will withhold additional information, including the identities of fallen warriors, until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.”
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth responded to the deaths with an X post saying: “Good luck, heroes. Your sacrifice only strengthens our resolve.”
The death toll in the US conflict has risen to 16 after a US Navy pilot who went missing earlier this month was declared dead, marking the second rise in the death toll this week.
Washington and Tehran reached a preliminary agreement to end the war in June, but the agreement fell apart within weeks: President Donald Trump declared the deal “over” on July 8.
