Sciver-Brunt first injured his calf on 29 April, suffering what England described at the time as a “minor” tear while playing in domestic cricket.

He subsequently missed the series against New Zealand and then India at the start of the international summer, before returning for England’s World Cup warm-up matches.

The England captain got through warm-ups against Australia and India and the World Cup opener against Sri Lanka, but reported “tightness” in a win over Ireland 10 days ago.

She batted in the nets on Friday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but otherwise hasn’t been seen doing more than a gentle run.

Worth suggested that the nature of cricket means it is very difficult to replicate match situations while completing rehabilitation from calf injuries.

“Things like going for a run, going from 0 to 100 mph, they’re really hard to replicate,” he added.

“You get immediate relief from inflammation, but the tendons like the load and need to be strengthened.

“It’s very difficult to achieve the balance between working the muscle enough and not straining it too much.

“Very often calf injuries are complicated because you feel like you’ve done the job and you put them back on the field in a game situation and something happens again.”
