Manchester Super Giants beat London Spirit by seven runs in The Hundred at Lord’s when Liam Livingstone’s powerful innings went in vain.

The home captain’s 40-ball knock of 69 from number four, preceded by bowling figures of 2-14 in the Super Giants’ innings, kept his team in contention as they chased 139.

After James Rew was dismissed for a two-ball duck, Livingstone scored 37 with Kiran Carlson (19) and 68 with Dewald Brevis.

South African international Brevis played as a junior partner, scoring 22 off 23 balls, before being caught and bowled by Gus Atkinson, who won 2-15, in the penultimate set.

Livingstone, needing 12 off the last five balls, faced English seamer Sonny Baker, who had conceded 25 runs in his first 15 deliveries.

Livingstone had already hit five sixes in his innings and was looking to do it again in a big way.

However, it was Baker, 23, who prevailed, conceding just four more runs, bowling Livingstone and then catching James Coles off the final delivery of the match as Spirit finished on 131-6.

Having been put into bat earlier, Super Giants captain Aiden Markram got off to a slow start, scoring one for 10 when Adam Milne caught him lbw, but opening partner Tim Seifert fared considerably better.

The New Zealander scored 67 off 45 deliveries, sharing pairs of 49 and 40 with Jos Buttler (16) and Heinrich Klaasen (17).

However, no other batsman reached double figures, and Spirit lost seven wickets for 35 runs and scored 138-9.

Seifert’s wicket was the seventh to fall when David Willey caught him at mid-on off Coles, but he ultimately helped set a winning total for the visitors.
