Ben Stokes is likely to balance his county commitments with franchise cricket around the world, says Durham coach Ryan Campbell.

The former England Test captain, who made his last appearance against New Zealand at Trent Bridge earlier this month, underlined his continued value to Durham by helping them beat Derbyshire with an unbeaten century in the One-Day Cup on Tuesday.

While Stokes intends to participate in the majority of the team’s remaining games this season, he has also spoken of his interest in playing abroad.

“He is now a retired Test superstar who has returned to work in Durham, so we will basically chart a course which will involve playing the One-Day Cup and playing as many of the six four-day matches,” Campbell told BBC Radio Tees.

“Obviously we’re going to keep an eye on him if his charges go up, but it’s tough. At this stage he’ll play as many games as we can.

“Looking ahead, I would have thought that would include next year as well. We will sit down and for the first time we will have to negotiate a contract for him, something we have not done before.

“But just listening to him, there are going to be a couple of franchise worlds that he’s going to want to set his feet in and with that, plus our material, I think it’s pretty exciting for him.”

Stokes, 35, has been in the IPL and Big Bash in the past but has not played any overseas franchise cricket since 2023.

For now, however, Durham will have the all-rounder on board again as they prepare to face Sussex in their next One-Day Cup match on Friday.

“He was talking about remembering when he was 17 or 18 when he came into the Durham team and he had some England players playing against him or in the same team,” Campbell added.

“And he said, ‘How wonderful was it when (Paul) Collingwood came back and played for us? I want our young guys to feel the same way now.’

“I think everyone who plays against him and will play with him in this competition will say: ‘I remember when I played with Ben Stokes.'”
