The upcoming “Game of Thrones” stage production, “The Mad King,” is still on track to premiere next month in the United Kingdom despite canceling its first week of previews. Variety I can confirm.

The Royal Shakespeare Company production was scheduled to release previews on Monday, July 20, but all four performances this week were cancelled, disappointing several fans who traveled from afar, including abroad.

The play will take place at the RSC’s headquarters, the Royal Shakespeare Theater in Stratford-upon-Avon, two hours from London.

An RSC representative declined to comment on what caused producers to cancel the four previous performances, but confirmed that Saturday’s show will go ahead as planned.

“We can confirm that RSC and our co-producers made the difficult decision to cancel preview screenings of George RR Martin’s ‘Game of Thrones: The Mad King’ this week, and that we will continue screening on Saturday, July 25,” the rep said. Variety. “We can also confirm that the production will officially open on Saturday, August 8.”

Adapted by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke, “Game of Thrones: The Mad King” will have its official opening night on August 8 and run until September 5.

The four-hour production (including a 20-minute intermission) takes place just before the events of Martin’s novels and will follow the great houses of Westeros as ambition, family ties and succession collide during the Mad King’s reign.

Michael Shaeffer will play King Aerys II Targaryen in the production, with Noah Ritter as Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, Michael Abubakar as Eddard Stark and Callum Woodhouse as Lord Robert Baratheon.
Maxim Ays joins as Ser Jaime Lannister, while Daisy Franks plays Cersei Lannister.

In addition to puppets and large sets, the show will feature a new theatrical setup that puts the audience “at the center of the action,” according to RSC co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey.
