A man has died in his car following a chase across the Queensland and New South Wales border.
The man, believed to be a 25-year-old from Queensland, was allegedly armed with a firearm when he crossed the border on the Gold Coast about 1am on Sunday.
He was initially reported to police in Robina at around 11.45pm, and was later found by officers on the side of West Burleigh Road. He evaded an attempt by officers to stop him and crossed the border along the Gold Coast Highway.
Queensland Police reported the incident to New South Wales Police, who located the man on Sexton Hill Drive in Banora Point.
The man did not stop when told to do so and a police chase ensued, which continued through several nearby suburbs before two road spikes were successfully deployed in South Murwillumbah.
He continued driving for some time before stopping on an embankment on Kyogle Road in Kunghur, about half an hour south-west of Murwillumbah, at around 2am.
The man was found unconscious inside his vehicle by the agents, who immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but he died at the scene of the incident.
A firearm was seized from the vehicle.
The man has not yet been formally identified and a critical incident team will investigate the matter.
