Sonos makes some of the best audio products on the market; Not only do they sound great, but they are also very easy to use. Starting with a focus on a strong home theater ecosystem, they are now expanding to have more products in their lineup that are portable and take that great sound with you on the go.
The Sonos Play represents a significant step forward for the brand, a speaker designed to act as a versatile centerpiece that works effortlessly within your existing home network while remaining durable enough to transition outdoors.
For anyone looking to invest in a premium audio solution, this device promises to eliminate the friction between static listening at home and entertainment on the go. It provides a rich stereo soundscape that dynamically adapts to your environment, ensuring you never have to compromise on audio quality. Whether you’re heading from the kitchen to the outdoors or even in a robe while packing for a weekend getaway, it’s designed to keep your soundtrack flowing uninterrupted.
The target audience for this device is quite broad, although it requires someone who prefers high-quality audio and a great ecosystem over the smaller, cheaper products on the market. By bridging the gap between stationary smart speakers and rugged outdoor gear, it creates a unique niche in the crowded premium audio market.
Design
The aesthetics of the device really appeal to me, as it leans heavily towards a modern, minimalist style, with a clean matte finish available in black or white. There’s no RGB lighting or look-at-me colors, just a focus on giving you great sound, with a design that suits many environments.
Measuring 192mm high, 113mm wide and 77mm deep, it strikes an excellent balance between substantial acoustic presence and space-saving footprint. Weighing 1.3kg, it feels reassuringly solid without being too heavy to comfortably carry for long periods. A notable design inclusion is the removable utility loop, which greatly improves everyday portability and allows you to secure the speaker while traveling.
Compared to traditional fixed home speakers like the Era 100 SL, this model stands out due to some of the decisions regarding its construction. It features an impressive IP67 rating, meaning it is completely dust and water resistant, able to withstand temporary immersion in water.
Physical button controls are located on the unit to handle basic playback, volume adjustments, and product grouping. On the back, a dedicated hardware microphone switch allows privacy-conscious users to completely disconnect power from the microphone array, which is a great user-centric touch.
What works exceptionally well is the integration of the included wireless charging dock, which serves as permanent docking in the home while keeping the speaker charged.. However, it’s worth noting that this charging dock is strictly rated for indoor use only and lacks weather resistance, so remember to leave the dock indoors when you take the speaker out into the garden.. Additionally, button controls can sometimes feel a little less premium than capacitive touch sliders, but they are much more convenient and reliable when operating the device with wet hands near a pool or kitchen sink.

Performance
Acoustically, the device offers a remarkably wide and powerful soundstage driven by three precisely tuned Class H digital amplifiers. High frequencies are handled by two angled tweeters equipped with custom waveguides, resulting in crisp highs and distinct stereo separation from a single unit.
Vocals and midrange frequencies remain clean and well-centered, while deep bass frequencies are efficiently driven by a single midwoofer working in conjunction with dual force-canceling passive radiators. This combination provides a punchy bass response while completely minimizing cabinet vibrations.
Battery performance is a standout metric here, with the internal 35Wh battery providing up to 24 hours of continuous playback on a single charge. This longevity easily surpasses many portable competitors, making it a reliable companion for all-day outdoor events.
The inclusion of a built-in power bank capability via the USB-C port adds tremendous utility, allowing you to recharge your smartphone’s battery while your music continues playing. This is an unexpected feature that can bring light or music sources like phones to the party.
The user experience is improved by the inclusion of Trueplay auto tuning. Using a built-in far-field microphone array, the speaker continuously analyzes the acoustics of its environment and dynamically optimizes the equalizer settings. When moving from a closed indoor space to an open outdoor environment, the sound signature automatically adjusts to keep the music balanced, bright and satisfying without the need for manual adjustments in the companion app.

Characteristics
The speaker comes equipped with modern connectivity options and ecosystem intelligence that make it incredibly flexible in different listening scenarios.
Ecosystem stereo pairing.
The speaker allows you to connect over a local network to seamlessly pair two units for a larger traditional stereo setup or group them together in multiple rooms. Being able to walk around the house and listen to the same music is a great experience. When that experience extends outside thanks to your Sonos Play sitting outdoors or in the back shed, it feels truly luxurious.
Grouping of several Bluetooth speakers.
For the first time on the go, users can group up to three additional compatible speakers directly from a single Bluetooth connection by holding down the play/pause button.
Universal flow control.
The platform offers full integration with over 100 streaming services, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and native voice assistant management.
Set songs as alarms
You can wake up to your favorite playlists and add reminders throughout the day.
voice assistant
Setting up a voice assistant, including Sonos Voice Control, allows you to control the speaker remotely and avoid having to stand next to the speaker to adjust settings, or even take out your phone. This can increase the locations where you can place the speaker, i.e. on top of an outdoor refrigerator during a party.
Through the USB-C port, users can connect external local audio sources such as a turntable using an auxiliary cable and an official line-in adapter, although I know I will never use this as I am completely digital in my workflows.
Problems and opportunities
While the product offers an exceptional overall experience, there are some areas where future iterations could improve.
Audio-wise, SONOS play sounds great when in place, however I can’t help but think it would benefit from a flat edge, allowing the speaker to be placed on its side and reap the acoustic benefits of sound bouncing off a larger surface area.
I understand the design choice of using physical buttons on the rubber top of the speaker, but I personally enjoy the capacitive touch they offer on other speakers in their line.

In general
The speaker represents a very successful expansion of a premium home audio ecosystem into the portable market. It manages to retain the sophisticated acoustic tuning, multi-room synchronization and smart features expected from a premium brand while featuring a rugged, waterproof chassis that thrives outdoors.
The 24-hour battery life and built-in power bank functionality ensure it remains a practical tool for travel and outdoor gatherings, rather than just an afterthought. This means it would be a great accessory for overnight camping trips, allowing you to focus on the playlist rather than searching for a charger.
It primarily appeals to buyers who want a single investment to cover multiple audio needs: a smart, stylish, permanent living room speaker that can be instantly lifted from its stand to power a backyard barbecue or pizza oven.
While an investment of AU$499 is significant, the sheer versatility on offer justifies the cost. Instead of purchasing a dedicated smart home speaker and a rugged travel speaker separately, this hybrid device handles both functions perfectly, representing excellent value for money in the long run.
