Ryan Gosling finally joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The “Project Hail Mary” star will play Ghost Rider in a new standalone film, Marvel Studios executive Kevin Feige announced onstage in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con. The film will be directed by Shawn Levy and is scheduled for release in 2028.

Levy is no stranger to the world of Marvel; He recently directed and produced the hit film “Deadpool & Wolverine.” He and Gosling also recently collaborated on the upcoming film “Star Wars: Starfighter,” which Levy also directed and Gosling stars in. That film will be released on May 28, 2027.

“I’m having the best flashback vibes here, because I was here two years ago when we showed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’” Levy said as he took the Hall H stage alongside Gosling and Feige. “I’ll never forget that night, because I was introduced to the biggest fans. Gosling is absolute shit. I say that with tremendous respect. We spent a lot of time last year doing ‘Starfighter,’ and when Ryan started talking about this character, I thought, ‘Bro, let’s ride.’ See you in 2028!”

Gosling will be the second actor to play the Spirit of Vengeance in a film after Nicolas Cage played the passionate biker in two Sony films. The character was also portrayed by Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes’ version of the comic book character in the Marvel-ABC series “Agents of SHIELD.” Luna was set to reprise the role in a standalone series for Hulu, but that project was scrapped in 2019.

Cage first starred in Sony’s 2007 film “Ghost Rider,” playing motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze. In the comics and origin movie, Johnny sells his soul to the devil Mephisto to cure his father’s cancer. As with any deal with the devil, Mephisto cures Johnny’s father, but he still dies in a stunt accident. Johnny then bonds with a supernatural demon called the Spirit of Vengeance and is able to transform into a flaming skeleton biker. He also has super strength, wields fire chain whips, and can force someone to experience the emotional pain he has inflicted on others with his Penance Stare.

Cage reprized his role for the 2011 sequel, “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” but reviews for both films were mostly negative.

The rights to Ghost Rider reverted to Marvel Studios, which reinvented the character for the ABC television show “Agents of SHIELD.” Gabriel Luna played Robby Reyes’ version of the character, who is a younger Latino man who takes on the mantle of Ghost Rider.

Gosling is having a big year after starring in “Project Hail Mary” and will join the Star Wars universe in next year’s “Starfighter” spinoff.
