Sony Electronics’ audio resume isn’t exactly thin. And we’re not just talking about the company’s well-known and beloved personal audio products, like the 1000XM Active Noise Canceling Headphones. We are talking about Sony | Pro Audio line, which includes icons such as the C-800G tube microphone in iso booths and the MDR-7506 headphones in broadcast booths. These tools have helped track pop, rock, and hip-hop songs that dominate the charts for decades. However, stage monitoring is a different beast than capturing the perfect vocal take or playing a clip track. It’s even a different beast than settling into an escapist listening session with audiophile in-ear monitors like the Meze Audio ASTRU. That’s why Sony has introduced the IER-M500 IEMs for artists who need isolation, a secure fit, clear signals, and reliable connectivity at an affordable price.

At $119, the IER-M500s are entry-level in cost, but offer all the features aspiring hobbyists and professionals need in medium to large-sized venues, all in a durable, low-profile housing. The compact cases, clearly indicated from left to right by colored collars, are produced using a ∅5mm MDD (Micro Deep Drawing) process that allows Sony to transform metal and plastic into small, seamless 3D cases. This optimized acoustic structure helps passively suppress ambient noise. Additionally, four sizes of proprietary polyurethane foam ear pads (think an upgraded version of the ones that come with the WF-1000XM6 ANC headphones) attenuate stage bleed, particularly high frequencies like cymbals, guitar feedback, crowd call-and-response, etc. And the deliberately thinned sound canal walls allow the tips to deform more naturally in the ear canal, benefiting a consistent seal and consistent comfort. All this means less need to turn up the volume and burn out your hearing.
Sony has also included five sizes of interchangeable ear tips (think fins that slide into the shell), which helps further customize the fit of the IER-M500 if you, or someone you play with, are prone to flailing around like even a practice space is the main stage at Coachella. It may not be the lock of a custom-molded pair like the top pick in our roundup of IEMs for drummers, but it also doesn’t cost $2,999 and doesn’t require goo to be pumped into your ear canal. For $119, it has a lot of accessories.
As for what you hear when plugged into a belt or mixer, the IER-M500 features a single full-range dynamic driver in a large rear chamber and balanced venting to support bass response, while the multi-layer diaphragm structure maintains clarity and control of high frequencies. [shown above]. The spec sheet says 10Hz-40kHz, a certified high-resolution audio range, but this is a musician/mixing engineer-focused tuning, prioritizing precision but supporting EQ, not a romantic boutique listening room curve. It also has a sensitivity of 103 dB, so efficient playback from any source is no problem.
And what goes over the ear is a stage-ready 1.6m detachable cable with an L-shaped 3.5mm jack, an integrated slider, a shirt clip, and bending durability that Sony says has been validated to match or exceed that of competing products. A proprietary connector improves insertion and resistance to moisture (aka sweat), but the headphones are still MMCX compatible for cable changes because cables fail and musicians are chaotic machines.
Available in three transparent colors (clear, black, and blue/red, the latter making left/right identification even easier in a dark place), Sony’s new IEMs arrive in early fall and are available for pre-sale today with a carrying bag included.
