Tom Holland recently told Fandango that he thought director Christopher Nolan hated his performance on his first day of filming “The Odyssey” because he kept asking for it to be cut. In reality, Nolan’s cuts were due to the limitations of the Imax cameras he used.
“Working with Imax cameras for the first time is an experience,” Holland explained. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before and I didn’t know it was only three minutes long. I remember you kept cutting away and I was with Jon.” [Bernthal]like, ‘Why does it keep cutting? Why do you keep doing that?’”
He added: “And in my head I thought, ‘You don’t like what we’re doing? What’s going on?’ And then, I remember that it was actually [stunt coordinator] George Cottle said: ‘No, no, no, there’s only three minutes in the magazine.’ I was like, ‘Oh, thank God.’ “I thought I was shitting the bed with this scene.”
Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Matt Damon’s Odysseus, in “The Odyssey,” which hits theaters July 17. Other cast members include Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth and John Leguizamo.
Despite the shaky start, Holland told GQ in a recent profile that working with Nolan on “The Odyssey” was “the best experience I’ve ever had on a film set.”
“Working with Chris, getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] It was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen someone who can work the way they do, and there’s a reason they’re hands down the best in the business,” Holland continued. “Having a front row seat to that and being a part of the process and collaborating with a true master of his craft and learning from him was the best experience I’ve ever had.”
