The United States paused its bombing campaign after President Donald Trump’s advisers told him they were running out of targets and expressed concern about the depletion of the American arsenal.
After 13 nights of escalating US airstrikes against Iran, the Pentagon suspended the campaign late on Friday, and no US strikes were reported on either Saturday or Sunday.
Iran, which had followed the US strikes each night with its own attacks on neighboring countries hosting US bases, has so far also held fire for two days.
The Iranian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that Tehran’s position remains that if the attacks stop, Iran will also stop its operations. “That message has already been conveyed to the United States,” the official said.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told US media on Sunday that Trump had decided to pause the attacks to give more time for diplomacy.
