Toronto police said they were investigating the latest attack with the help of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and international law enforcement partners.

Superintendent Jonathan Ko of the RCMP called it “another disturbing incident,” while the city’s mayor, Olivia Chow, called the attack “brazen.”

The shooting occurred at around 04:45 local time (09:45 BST). Officers said they recovered a bullet casing at the scene and damage to the facade of the building.

At least two people were inside the consulate at the time, Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo said, but he noted that the building is “very heavily fortified” and those inside probably did not hear the gunshot.

He added that the investigation is ongoing and that police throughout the city have been asked to be on the lookout for possible suspects.

“We will bring those responsible to justice,” Barredo said.

In a post on X, the US consulate in Toronto thanked police for their response.

Police have been stationed in front of the consulate since March, when shots were fired outside the building in what police at the time called a “national security incident.” No one was injured in that attack.

In June, police carried out raids in connection with the shooting. During the operation, a police officer, Agent Marc Pinizzotto, 43, died.

Police later arrested several 18- and 19-year-old suspects for allegedly carrying out a series of shootings, including the March attack outside the consulate, as part of a broader network of hired gunmen.

Two Jewish-owned bakeries in the city were also attacked, at least one of them by gunfire, over the weekend. Police said Monday there was currently nothing linking the two incidents, but they did not rule out a connection.

In May, U.S. officials arrested an Iraqi national, Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi, 32, for allegedly plotting more than a dozen attacks in North America and Europe against Jewish institutions and American interests, including the U.S. consulate in Toronto.

Toronto police have not said whether al-Saadi is linked to their investigation and have not specified a motive for this latest consulate shooting.
