AI is escaping the tech industry. The latest evidence suggests that the technology is no longer limited to software engineers and data scientists; It is spreading to the broader economy, including in Europe.

New data from Indeed shows that employers are increasingly adding AI directly to jobs for non-tech roles in sales, human resources, legal affairs, customer service, education, healthcare, and even trucking.

In the United States, the number of jobs “touched by AI” has more than tripled since 2022, while in five of the top six markets, the majority of jobs tagged with AI are now outside the technology sector.

One reason this is important is that more and more employers are making AI a central part of the job itself. In fact, it found that in five of the six markets it studied, the majority of roles labeled as AI are now outside the technology sector; Germany, France, the UK and the Netherlands have joined the US in seeing AI spread to white-collar professions. Spain was the only exception, where AI hiring remains concentrated in traditional technology jobs.

The change is manifesting itself in surprisingly familiar occupations. Employers are advertising for AI-enabled physical therapists, truck drivers, human resources managers, marketing specialists, salespeople and teachers, reflecting demand for workers who can use AI tools instead of building them.

That’s an important distinction: The AI ​​economy is increasingly focused on growing existing jobs, not just creating new technical positions, a sign that AI adoption is becoming a broad workplace phenomenon rather than a Silicon Valley story.
