“Princess Diaries 3” recently had a breakthrough after a scrapped script, Anne Hathaway revealed during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Radio Andy.”

“I’m busy making baby number three, and that’s sort of taken the place of knowing exactly when I can do ‘Princess Diaries 3,'” Hathaway said.

“I can say that I think we had a great breakthrough in history,” he added. “I think we’re moving in the right direction. The script we were working on, we had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update that I think anyone wants, but we all feel very good that this will be the one.”

The continuation of the series “The Princess Diaries” has been in production since 2022. Adele Lim (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) signed on to direct in 2024.

“We just want to get the story right because it’s a franchise that’s so loved by so many people,” Lim said. Variety on the carpet at the Gold Gala in May.

Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, now Queen of Genovia, in the third sequel. Lim joked that fans of the original films can expect “a lot of fun returns” from other cast members.

Lim said in May that the filming and production schedule was still being worked out and that a release date had not yet been announced.

“The Princess Diaries” premiered in 2001 and was followed by the 2004 sequel, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.” The two films have together grossed $300 million worldwide.
