World Cup 2026: FIFA suspends one-match red card ban on American striker Folarin Balogun

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was among those who demanded the decision be reviewed. When asked about the United States’ World Cup performance during a news conference, Rubio said, “It was great. They got screwed with that red card.” “There needs to be an appeals process for that. It’s probably too late for that.”

More generally, in the United States there has been a lot of concern among fans over the red card of one of their star players. Many media outlets have questioned the decision and the way football applies its rules, in terms of having to leave the pitch after a red card and then being banned from a future match.

Balogun has been a key figure for the United States at the World Cup, scoring twice for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as they began their campaign with a 4-1 win against Paraguay.

The former Arsenal striker also opened the scoring against Bosnia before being sent off in the 64th minute after a fight with Muharemovic over a looping ball.

As Balogun tried to protect the ball, Muharemovic managed to get ahead and, as the striker’s boot returned to the ground, it landed on the back of the Bosnian’s ankle, causing it to twist.

Brazilian referee Raphael Claus brandished the red card after the video assistant referee (VAR) sent him to the pitch monitor to watch a super slow motion replay of the incident.

According to FIFA regulations, a red card “automatically incurs suspension from the following match,” but the governing body “may impose additional match suspensions and other disciplinary measures.”

During the group stage of the tournament, Qatari midfielder Assim Madibo saw his suspension increased from one match to five matches for his foul on Canadian Ismael Kone, who was left with a broken leg.

But there is recent precedent in which FIFA lifted a World Cup ban.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been cleared to play in his country’s opening match of the tournament despite his red card against the Republic of Ireland during World Cup qualifying.

The 41-year-old was sent off for an elbow to the back from Dara O’Shea during Portugal’s 2-0 qualifying defeat in November and initially received a three-match ban.

But after missing a match against Armenia, FIFA suspended the remainder of the ban for one year on November 25, allowing Ronaldo to participate in Portugal’s first two World Cup matches.
