Leslie Odom Jr. was forced to leave a matinee screening of “Hamilton” in London mid-show on Thursday.
Variety According to his understanding, Odom retired after the first act and was replaced by Manaia Glassey-Ohlson. He did not appear in the evening performance of the show.
A “Hamilton” spokesperson declined to elaborate on the cause of Odom’s departure, but confirmed that he would return tonight for Friday night’s performance.
Odom will not perform on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays due to a long scheduled break. Currently those are the only dates of his career with tickets still available. When selecting tickets for those dates, buyers are warned that Odom will not be performing.
Odom is in the midst of a limited summer run reprising his Tony-winning role as Aaron Burr in the musical in the West End. It originated the performance Off-Broadway in 2014 before transferring to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s production the following year. Odom left the show in 2016 after winning the Tony for best actor and didn’t return until last fall, when he reprized the role on Broadway for a limited run.
Earlier this year it was confirmed that Odom would step back into Burr’s shoes in London, at the Victoria Palace Theatre, from July 3 to September 5. He stars alongside Stephenson Ardern-Sodje as Alexander Hamilton, Akmed Junior Khemalai as George Washington and Daniel Boys as King George III.
Despite the cost of tickets, which start from £128 ($170) and go up to £500, fans hoping to see the actor have been sympathetic, if understandably disappointed.
“So gutted I couldn’t see him tonight – the main reason we came 6 hours away and £200 later – it’s so devastating. [sic]” one wrote on the production’s Instagram page. Another responded: “I flew from Germany and planned a whole trip on this ticket, but I hope it’s okay!”
