Cinema Guild has acquired the North American distribution rights to Hong Sangsoo’s “Nowhere to Lay My Eyes.”
The film will have its world premiere at the 79th Locarno Film Festival in August.
“Nowhere to Lay My Eyes” follows Sanghee (Kim Minhee), who visits her mother on Jeju Island with her brother after 10 years of separation. His stepfather, a documentary filmmaker, is working on a “grass grave” project, while his mother’s restaurant has become a lucrative business. Sanghee also meets her stepfather’s daughter, who recently started painting. Sanghee, who works importing snacks and films short films in her spare time, spends two days with family as old secrets, unsolicited advice, and empty flattery rise to the surface.
The film marks Hong’s 35th feature film and follows Sanghee through a series of awkward encounters and small revelations. The film reunites Hong again with Kim Minhee, Kwon Haehyo, Shin Seokho and Park Miso, and marks actor Choi Myeonggil’s first appearance in one of the director’s films.
Cinema Guild President Peter Kelly said, “We will never run out of things to say about director Hong as he continues to surprise with each new release. A wonderful film to watch with a captivating performance by Kim Minhee.”
The acquisition was negotiated by Kelly on behalf of Cinema Guild and Youngjoo Suh of Finecut.
Cinema Guild’s upcoming programming includes restorations of Otar Iosseliani’s films and Hong’s “The Day She Returns.” The distributor’s recent releases include Kamal Aljafari’s “With Hasan in Gaza,” Hong’s “What Does That Nature Say to You,” and Aleksandre Koberidze’s “Dry Leaf.”
