Patriot Resources has declared a new high-grade copper-silver discovery at its Tonic prospect in the Mumbwa district of Zambia, with its maiden drilling program reaching up to 2.56 per cent copper and 62.3 grams per tonne (g/t) silver in shallow drilling.
The company’s first drilling campaign at Tonic hit the mark, with high grades landing within a broader mineralized envelope, some of which has started impressively from the surface.
The high-grade copper hit of 2.56 per cent was located within a wider 3 meter section at 1.06 per cent copper, 25.3 g/t silver and 0.97 per cent zinc from 54 m. The same hole also returned a wider intercept of 17 meters grading 0.41 per cent copper, 4.7 g/t silver and 0.3 per cent zinc over just 29 m.
Patriot’s results appear to validate the company’s internal exploration model, which has now successfully progressed from surface mapping and geophysics to a drill-confirmed discovery.
“The Tonic prospect appears to be a real Greenfields find.”
Dominic Duggan, President and CEO of Patriot Resources
Management says mineralization remains open in all directions, suggesting there is much more to come. One hole even had to be completed while still mineralizing due to drilling difficulties, suggesting the potential for the system to continue at depth.
Other hits in the early stages of the inaugural campaign included 29m shallow at 9.78g/t silver and 0.11% copper in just 2m, with a high-grade silver hit of 1m at 73.9g/t.
Tonic’s discovery lies within the company’s broader Kitumba project and the famous rocks of the Katanga Supergroup of the Central African Copperbelt, a geological hotspot of significant base and precious metal deposits.
Notably, the discovery is just 18 kilometers from Sinomine’s new $600 million (A$865 million) Kitumba copper project, where a new processing facility and copper smelter will be commissioned this year to treat ore from its massive 109 million tonne resource grading 1 per cent copper.
Patriot Resources Managing Director and CEO Dominic Duggan said: “This is a proud moment for our team. The Tonic prospect appears to be a genuine Greenfields discovery, the team took an undrilled target, advanced it through mapping, trenching and geophysics, and has now established copper, silver, zinc and cobalt mineralization from surface through its maiden drilling program.”
The discovery follows a strategic pivot by Patriot, which shifted the company’s focus from its Gorman lithium project in Canada to Tier 1 copper projects in Zambia and Peru. The company recently acquired its Tassa silver-gold project in Peru, which now has a sizeable silver target of 774 million ounces.
Patriot says its footprint in Zambia is huge and contiguous, and its recent consolidation makes its 525 square kilometer project one of the largest holdings in the famous Mumbwa district.
Additionally, having Tier 1 infrastructure on a project’s doorstep is a huge advantage for a junior explorer, and could solve the multi-billion dollar question of how to process any future economic resources.
Extracting high-grade copper from the surface in a maiden drilling program is a full day at the office for any explorer. But doing so in one of the world’s largest copper provinces and just a stone’s throw from a major new processing plant could be a completely different game.
