The funeral ceremonies come less than three weeks after Iran and the United States signed a preliminary agreement to end the war and reopen the crucial Strait of Hormuz waterway, through which 20% of the world’s oil and gas shipments pass.

The two countries also gave themselves two months to reach a final deal covering Iran’s nuclear program, U.S. sanctions and a permanent truce.

Mediator Qatar said Iranian and American negotiators made “positive progress” in indirect talks in Doha last week after a four-day exchange of attacks and that their next meeting would be scheduled after the conclusion of events for Khamenei.

On Tuesday there will be a funeral procession and prayers in the central city of Qom, the center of Iran’s Shiite Muslim clerical establishment.

The ceremonies will move on Wednesday to the Iraqi sanctuary cities of Karbala and Najaf.

They will end on Thursday, when Khamenei will be buried at the shrine of Imam Reza in his hometown of Mashhad, in northeastern Iran.
